Denver Christian Athletic Physicals
Monday, August 2, 2010 at 5:00 pm
Denver Christian High School is excited to continue its partnership with Dr. Ihsan Erhuy and Dr, Niall McNally of Mountain View Pain Center in Lone Tree. They have been working with our athletes for the past year, and will be conducting athletic physicals for athletes at the high school on Monday August 2, 2010 at 5:00 pm. The cost for the physical exam will be $25.00, with a $5.00 rebate coming back to the school.
Since Dr. Erhuy and Dr. McNally work with many of our student athletes who have suffered an athletic injury, having them conduct the athletic physicals will be helpful in determining the normal muscular structure, range of motion, past injury history, and other factors to safeguard our athletes, and to help them to return to play in a safe environment. Drs. Erhuy and McNally are frequently on the sideline for many of our games and they have successfully treated many of our student athletes.
If you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, please email Athletic Director Cliff Hendrick to indicate that you will participate in these physical examinations on August 2 at 5:00 pm. We will also be administering the ImPACT baseline test for concussions on this same evening.

Boy’s Soccer Team Claims 2nd Straight League Title
Denver Christian’s boy’s soccer team has won its second consecutive Metro League regular season title with two very exciting victories on Thursday and Friday of last week. On Thursday, the Crusaders defeated a very worthy opponent from Peak to Peak with a 3 – 1 win at Highlands Ranch Stadium. After an early Michael Vanden Berg breakaway goal, the Pumas tied the match with a long range answer of their own of the foot of Brady Wisott. The game remained deadlocked for more than 50 minutes when Brent Ham scored a spectacular goal in the 74th minute followed by another score from Vanden Berg after a great cross from Luke Monsma.
On Friday the opponent was Colorado Academy where the game was contested on the Mustang’s campus. The only goal was scored in the 38th minute when Chris Pranger stuffed in a rebound after an extended attack on the Mustang keeper, Eric Hopfenbeck. Brent ham and Jesse Montavon were credited with assists on the goal. The match was an intense affair with both teams mounting occasional attacks on goal, only to be stifled by the opponent defense. The Pranger goal held up throughout the afternoon leading to the Crusader 1 – nil victory.
The 3 – A playoffs begin this week with the 32 team bracket determined this weekend by the CHSAA Soccer Committee. The Crusaders will face a team from the Western Slope Conference: Colorado Rocky Mountain School from Carbondale. The playoffs are sponsored by CHSAA and that means that we are no longer able to accept Metro League Passes, Denver Christian athletic cards, or Denver Christian season tickets for admission to the game. All spectators will need to pay the admission established by CHSAA. Admission prices for the first and second round games will be $5.00 for adults and $4.00 for students and seniors.
Denver Christian Cross Country - Fall 2009 News
Denver Christian Cross Country athlete Ryan Poland has had a spectacular season this fall. Ryan won the Metro League championship two weeks ago with a very good time of 15:53 for the 5 kilometer course at Holy Family. And on Friday Ryan repeated his feat with a victory in the Region 6 race at Clements Park. Next up for the striding senior will be the state cross country race in Ft. Collins at Fossil Ridge High School. The 3-A division will run at noon on Saturday, Oct. 31.
Ryan has known the victory tape several times this fall with wins at the “Pre-State” race in Ft. Collins, the Hawk Classic in Brighton, the Liberty Bell in Littleton (the biggest cross country race in the state each year.), and the Summit County 9100. Good luck to Ryan in the state meet this Saturday!

FORT COLLINS - Denver Christian's Ryan Poland and Brush's Amos Bowen approached the course's first hill just a few hundred yards from the starting line Saturday morning in the lead. It was just the first race of the day at the Poudre School District Pre-State Cross Country Invitational at Fossil Ridge High School, but Poland and Bowen were setting the tone for the season- opening event.
Poland, a senior who finished 19th at state last year, shattered his personal-best time by more than 30 seconds en route to finishing the 2A-3A boys 5K race in 15 minutes, 54.52 seconds, more than eight seconds ahead of Bowen. But, even in victory, Poland kept things in perspective.
"It's good. It's good to have a good race at the beginning of the year, but it's a long time until October," said Poland, referring to next month's state meet scheduled for Oct. 31, also at Fossil Ridge.
Even so, Poland and Bowen, the top returning finisher in 3A from a year ago, were trendsetters. Including Nederland's Kelley Robinson, the defending state champion in 3A girls, Saturday belonged to the favorites. One of those was Wheat Ridge's Scott Fauble.
Taking over for graduated teammate Dart Schwarderer, Fauble clocked a time of 15:46.46 to easily win the 4A boys race, finishing more than 11 seconds ahead of Pueblo West's Michael Cernoia. He didn't quite hit his clocked time on his watch, but Fauble was pleased with the result.
"Yeah, I'm really happy with what I did. My goal was to come out and break 16. I ran 15:45. I was really happy. It's a tough course," Fauble said.
The event gave runners like Fauble a chance to compare themselves to the course and to the field.
"I wanted to get a time to compare this one to the race at the end of the year. Also, you always run against competition," Fauble said. "It's a great race to see where you fit in because there's so many great runners, great teams here."
Cherry Creek's Walter Schafer ran a day-best time of 15:31.57 to beat Pomona's Adam Sinda by more than 25 seconds in the 5A event.
In the team competition, Cherry Creek edged Regis Jesuit for top honors in 5A boys.
On the girls side, Allie Parks of Greeley Central won in 4A, and Highlands Ranch's Eleanor Fulton led a 1-2-3 finish for the Falcons.
Estes Park, in 2A-3A, and Evergreen, in 4A, also won team titles.

Swalley Retires as DCHS Football Coach after 27 Memorable Years
After 27 years as the head football coach at Denver Christian, Mark Swalley has resigned. Coach Swalley cited expanding duties as a principal and “the time was just right” in his decision to step down. Coach Swalley was involved in the Denver Christian program from its earliest days and served as an assistant coach for eight years under Eldon Dyk. He was the fourth head football coach in the history of the program. After becoming the head coach in 1982, the Crusaders won the Metro League Championship. Five more conference titles would follow through the years including the 2006 co-championship shared with Kent-Denver. In Coach Swalley’s career, the Crusaders qualified for the state playoffs 15 times, including a streak of 11 out of 13 seasons.
Of course the Crusader’s greatest accomplishment under Coach Swalley was the 2003 2-A state title concluding a 12-1 season. The Crusaders rolled through the playoffs that fall with impressive wins against Pagosa Springs, Brush and Roaring Fork before dominating Eaton in the championship game played in a blizzard at All-City Field in Denver. The Crusaders ran up an 18 – 0 lead in the first half and cruised to the title.
A reception to honor Coach Swalley is being planned after the Christmas season.

In addition, each coach presented special team awards voted on by the players of each team.
Our athletic program at Denver Christian is strong! Over half of our student population participates in our Fall Sports offering at Denver Christian. Since there is a strong correlation between athletic participation and academic success, it is a blessing that such a large percentage of our students are involved in interscholastic sports. The values inherited through participation are numerous and almost always have a positive effect on the development of the young Christian at our school.
Here is the listing of the All-Conference selections in the Metro League for the various sports:
